Drive to Survive: Trailer reveals drama of the 2025 Formula 1 season

(Motorsport-Total.com) – Formula 1 fans can mark February 27th in red on their calendars! Just under two weeks before the launch on Netflix, the streaming giant released the first trailer for the eighth season of “Drive to Survive” to fans on February 12th. And one thing is clear: The year 2025 offered enough explosive material to fill the proven ten-episode format with maximum drama.

We have taken a close look at the trailer and analyzed which storylines the producers are focusing on.

The trailer starts where the year 2025 had its spectacular beginning: in London’s O2 Arena. The “F1 75” event for the 75th anniversary of the World Championship was the setting for the first joint car presentation of all ten teams. Between performances by Take That and Brian Tyler, the camera captures the tension.

“This is it. The moment we’ve all been waiting for,” the McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri can be heard saying in unison. A foretaste of a season that was to end historically for both.

The Year of the Rookies – and Briatore’s “Hard Hand”

No fewer than six newcomers shook up the grid in 2025. From Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) to Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber) to Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls). Jack Doohan (Alpine) and Oliver Bearman (Haas) are also in the spotlight.

Particularly explosive: Alpine returnee Flavio Briatore is directly confronted with his merciless manner in the trailer. When asked if he enjoys firing people, the Italian dryly replies: “Yes, if people don’t do their job.” A direct cut to Jack Doohan hints at how his short guest appearance ended before Franco Colapinto took over.

Hamilton in the Red Overall: Euphoria Meets Reality

The “blockbuster move” of the decade: Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari. Drive to Survive shows the record champion’s first steps in Maranello, but also the initial difficulties. “It’s fun to have something new,” Hamilton says in the paddock to Carlos Sainz – the man whose cockpit he took over.

But the harmony quickly crumbled. The trailer addresses the friction with race engineer Riccardo Adami, who has already been moved to a different role for 2026. “Stop talking to me while I’m fucking racing here!” Hamilton snaps at his engineer over the radio.

McLaren: Two Number 1s on a Collision Course?

It was foreseeable that Netflix would exploit the internal team war at McLaren. In the first half of the season, Norris and Piastri dominated almost at will. The Woking-based team let them off the leash – on the condition: “Don’t crash!” The fact that this went wrong in Canada and Singapore is likely to be documented in detail in the series.

It is perhaps the biggest news of 2025: Christian Horner left his position as CEO and Team Principal of Red Bull in July. “Something was taken away from me that was not my decision,” a visibly affected Horner states in the trailer. With the words “I think we’re done,” he ends the interview in front of the cameras. The Laurent Mekies era began while Red Bull trembled internally.

After the summer break, Max Verstappen fought back and became a threat to McLaren’s dominance. Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, finds a fitting comparison in the trailer: “Max is like the villain in a horror movie. He keeps coming back.” Horner adds: “Never underestimate the competition.”

The Rotating Red Bull Cockpit

The drama surrounding the second cockpit next to Verstappen is also highlighted. Yuki Tsunoda’s heavy crash in Imola qualifying serves as the hook for the misery: first Liam Lawson, who had to leave after just two weekends, then Tsunoda, who finished the season but is now “only” a test driver.

Ten Years of Liberty Media: How Formula 1 Has Changed

For German fans, there is an emotional highlight: Nico Hülkenberg and his sensational podium in Silverstone. After 239 attempts without a top-3 result – an unloved record – the man from Emmerich raced from 19th on the grid to third place in the rain in the Sauber. The images of the cheering Sauber crew promise goosebump moments.

In the end, there is the crowning. The World Championship duel between Norris, Piastri, and Verstappen was only decided in the Abu Dhabi finale. Verstappen won the race, but third place was enough for Norris to be crowned Formula 1 World Champion for the first time. The cameras were likely closer to the tears and the cheering in the McLaren garage than anyone else. From February 27th, we will know more when the flag falls for Season 8.
