The former Scuderia Formula 1 driver was driving a Ferrari 312 from the 1969 season, which was then piloted by Chris Amon and Pedro Rodriguez. Exiting the tunnel, he lost control of the car, which is equipped with a 3.0-liter V12 engine, and crashed into the guardrails before the harbor chicane.

The front of the historic race car was severely damaged in the process.

For Alesi, it’s not the first time he’s put a historic Ferrari into the track limits at this event: in 2021, the Frenchman crashed a Ferrari 312B3 into the barrier on the start-finish straight three laps from the end, after a fierce battle with Marco Werner in the Lotus 77.

Alesi had been leading the race for Formula 1 cars from 1973 to 1976 when he was touched from behind by Werner and crashed into the pit wall. Then, as now, the Briton Michael Lyons won the race: he drove a Surtees TS9 from the 1971 Formula 1 season.

The Historic Grand Prix of Monaco has been attracting fans to the principality since the 1990s. A total of eight different classes, from pre-war cars to the 80s, were at the start.

Ferrari didn’t have much greater success with the 312 in the 1969 season either: the Scuderia had only fielded one car at the time, Chris Amon left the team after five retirements in six races and was replaced by Pedro Rodriguez, who, however, was already in a second Ferrari at Amon’s last race at Silverstone. In total, Ferrari only scored seven points that year.

The 201-time Grand Prix participant Alesi drove for the Italians from Maranello for a total of five years from 1991 to 1995, but only managed to win a single Grand Prix: in Canada in 1995.
