(Motorsport-Total.com) – The FIA, the world governing body for motorsport, announced further adjustments to the current Formula 1 regulations on Friday, both with regard to the ongoing season and the coming year. The most important change: From the 2027 season, the power of the combustion engine will increase by 50 kilowatts (around 67 hp)!

This power increase goes hand in hand with an increase in the fuel flow rate, as well as a nominal reduction in the power output of the ERS system (energy recovery) by also 50 kilowatts. In plain terms: Formula 1 is saying goodbye to the current 50/50 ratio after only one season.
These adjustments were decided on Friday during an online meeting convened by the FIA, attended not only by team principals and Formula 1 (FOM) but also representatives of the power unit manufacturers.
According to the official press release, there was “agreement to introduce changes that further strengthen fair and safe competition, are intuitively understandable for drivers and teams, and serve the overall good of the sport.”
Formula 1 rules 2027: Drivers provide “valuable input”
It was agreed that “further detailed discussions in technical working groups, consisting of representatives from the teams and power unit manufacturers, are necessary before the final package of measures is adopted.”
The final proposals presented during Friday’s meeting are the result of a series of consultations that took place in recent weeks between the FIA and various stakeholders. The drivers, who had expressed strong criticism of the current regulations, are said to have provided “valuable input.”

The next step will be to submit these regulatory changes – once they are finalized – to the World Motor Sport Council for approval via an electronic vote. This is to take place once the power unit manufacturers have themselves voted on the proposed package.
2026 rule adjustment “a step in the right direction”
The meeting began with a review of the rule changes introduced for the Miami Grand Prix. The conclusion from the application of the modifications introduced there, which aimed to increase safety and reduce excessive energy recovery, was positive: They led to improved competition and represented “a step in the right direction.”
After thorough analysis, the FIA also reported that no significant problems or safety concerns were identified in connection with the Miami race. However, the evaluation of the “Miami package” is ongoing, with the goal of making additional adjustments at future events.
These include revised measures to improve safety at the start as well as provisions to increase safety on wet tracks. These will be communicated to the teams once they are finalized. Improvements to the visual signaling systems are also currently being considered for the Canadian Grand Prix.
