(Motorsport-Total.com) – Who would have thought twelve months ago that the Formula 1 world for Kimi Antonelli would currently look the way it does? His debut year in the premier class was marked by steep learning curves, unexpected setbacks and, at times, harsh criticism – even of himself. Today, however, he is riding an unprecedented wave of success.

Probably the most obvious difference to the previous year: Antonelli now knows what to expect. The sheer routine of a complete Formula 1 calendar has fundamentally changed his approach to a race weekend.
“The year of experience itself plays a huge role,” Antonelli explains before the Barcelona weekend. “Simply gaining your own experience and understanding what is good for you on a race weekend and beyond, and what isn’t. Returning to a weekend you’ve already completed in the previous year already makes a huge difference.”
For the Mercedes driver, it’s not just about driving itself, but about holistic energy management. Being able to better assess track evolution and internalize the fixed structure of the sessions allows him to allocate his energy more precisely.
The result: When Antonelli gets into the cockpit in 2026, he is mentally and physically fresher. He knows how to tap into his potential precisely, which currently gives him an enormous advantage in duels with teammate George Russell.
The End of Self-Doubt
Antonelli experienced a mental low, especially during the European races of his rookie season. The pressure of succeeding Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes weighed heavily on the young talent’s shoulders. Asked if he still doubts his potential today, his answer is unequivocal.
“To be honest, not really. Last year that was definitely a big issue. I doubted myself a lot, especially during that difficult phase in Europe. But this year it’s obviously a different story.”
Antonelli’s maturity in dealing with these setbacks is remarkable. Instead of suppressing the difficult moments of his rookie season, he sees them as a crucial catalyst for his current dominance.
“Considering how bad it was at the time, in hindsight I’m actually very grateful that it happened, because it made me grow a lot and taught me a lot about myself,” says the Italian.
The Art of Staying Relaxed with a 66-Point Lead
Anyone who wins five races in a row and leads the world championship by 66 points after only six races could easily succumb to arrogance or extreme championship pressure. But Antonelli deliberately chooses a different approach. He has discovered the concept of “relaxed driving” for himself.

Instead of being crushed by expectations, he shifts his focus to the pure joy of the sport.
Formula 1 Teams with at Least Five Wins at the Start of the Season

“One thing I told myself at the beginning of the year is that I want to try to enjoy all the weekends and every time I get in the car as much as possible,” says the championship leader. “It also helps me to drive a bit more relaxed and not be as tense as last year. That definitely plays a big role.”
He refuses to view his race entries through the lens of the world championship already. While the media world is already calculating the title win, Antonelli stoically focuses on the process: the car, the track, maximum performance.
A Rock-Solid Support System in the Background
Antonelli owes his groundedness, despite the current hype, to a stable environment. Besides his parents, who keep him grounded and correct him when he “strays a little from the path,” Mercedes has become a true surrogate family for him.

Since 2018, he has been part of the structure from Brackley. Names like Peter “Bono” Bonnington and Team Principal Toto Wolff are no longer superiors to him, but close confidants.
“They have stood behind me through good times and bad and have accompanied me on this journey so far,” Antonelli emphasizes. He is currently repaying this blind trust from the team on the track in the form of trophies.
How Much Potential Still Lies in the W17?
However, Antonelli delivered the most frightening realization for the rest of the field – and especially for George Russell – with a small aside. Although he is currently the benchmark in Formula 1, he does not yet see himself at the end of his development.
“There are still questions on my part that need to be answered: How much further I can go in a short time, how much further I can push myself – and how great my potential really is.”
Should the Kimi Antonelli of 2026 indeed still have room for improvement, Formula 1 is facing an era that could be shaped by a new star on the nose of a Mercedes. The transformation from a doubting rookie to a seasoned dominator is, in any case, already the story of this season.
