Monaco Chaos: Mercedes requests “Right of Review”

McLaren and Red Bull announced a possible protest over the weekend, now Mercedes has followed suit. “We have requested a ‘Right of Review’ because we simply want to be at the table when decisions are made,” reveals Toto Wolff.

Specifically, this case concerns the result of George Russell, who was also affected by an incorrect penalty in Monaco. However, the chances of retroactively improving Russell’s result are very slim.

Because unlike Gasly, whose penalty was later withdrawn, Russell had already served his penalty in the race. This means it is essentially no longer reversible.

Villeneuve: Strong Hamilton a problem for Ferrari?

Of course, Ferrari is happy about Lewis Hamilton’s victory. Nevertheless, Jacques Villeneuve believes that the Scuderia had not expected Hamilton to have such a clear grip on Charles Leclerc at the moment.

“They only extended Leclerc’s contract two races ago,” he recalls on Sky, emphasizing that the Monegasque might have gotten the “best contract of all time.”

“But who is scoring the points? Who is at the top? Lewis. So that will also cause some internal problems,” believes the 1997 world champion.

Russell in Strategy Dilemma

The Mercedes driver is not sure if a two-stop strategy was the right decision yesterday. “Honestly, my pace wasn’t quite strong enough today,” he admits.

“But I think I could have just adopted [Hamilton’s] three-stop strategy. However, that would have made me vulnerable to Kimi with the two-stop strategy,” he knows.

Meaning: If he had simply copied Ferrari’s strategy, he might have been able to keep Hamilton behind him. But he might have come under pressure from Antonelli.

“And I might not have been happy with that in the end either. So I need to discuss that with my team,” says Russell.

Alpine: No anger over team orders

Franco Colapinto had to make way for Pierre Gasly in yesterday’s race. He naturally didn’t like that, but emphasizes: “From the garage, you have a much better overview. Of course, I understand this decision.”

Ultimately, it paid off, as Gasly finished the race in P7, and Colapinto also scored points in tenth. “If someone had told me on Friday that we would finish P7 in the race, I would have definitely signed up for that immediately,” says Gasly.

Because in qualifying, he and Colapinto had only finished P14 and P13. “Ultimately, we benefited from the VSC,” Gasly admits, but Alpine still showed a significantly better performance on Sunday.

“Our car seems to perform better and be more competitive on Sundays than on Saturdays,” Flavio Briatore also observed. “We need to quickly find ways to improve our overall performance,” he therefore demands.

Hamilton: Not thinking about the championship

The record world champion himself says regarding the championship situation: “Honestly, the way the year started, I haven’t thought about it yet.” Because so far, it actually looked like a Mercedes walkover.

“Of course, we have been working towards victories. But I was always aware that it takes time,” says Hamilton, who reminds that the Mercedes still has some advantages.

“We know we have this power deficit. There will be tracks with long straights, which makes it even more difficult,” he warns, emphasizing that Ferrari therefore still needs to make progress itself.

“It’s very, very difficult for me to think long-term at the moment. I think you just have to take one race at a time,” says Hamilton.
