(Motorsport-Total.com) – A race-worn helmet of Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna fetched a significantly higher price than originally expected at the Motorsport Icons Live Auction. The memorabilia from the 1992 season was auctioned for £500,000 (approx. €590,000), far exceeding the pre-auction estimate of £80,000 to £120,000.

The Shoei helmet was auctioned on July 7 at the Silverstone Museum by BUDDS Auctions. According to the auction house, the exhibit was offered for sale publicly for the first time.
Its authenticity as the original helmet is confirmed by an official McLaren certificate of authenticity. Furthermore, its use and authenticity were documented through an extensive photo comparison. According to this, Senna wore the helmet at the British, German, and Hungarian Grands Prix in 1992. The Brazilian won the Hungarian Grand Prix with this helmet.
Historic memorabilia with special significance
The 1992 season also marked the final year of the successful partnership between McLaren and Honda. Senna entered the season as the reigning world champion but ultimately had to concede to the superior Williams team.
A special historical footnote also connects the helmet with the 1992 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. It was the only Formula 1 race where Ayrton Senna stood on the podium together with Michael Schumacher and Nigel Mansell.

Besides Senna’s helmet, the auction included numerous other memorabilia from motorsport history. This included, among other things, a special collection contributed by Nigel Mansell.
According to the auction house, the proceeds from this collection were to be fully donated to the charity UK Youth. Additionally, a race suit worn by Charles Leclerc in a special design from the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix, signed gloves from Sir Stirling Moss, as well as other helmets, race suits, model cars, and collectibles were auctioned.
The high winning bid for Senna’s race helmet once again underscores the exceptional collector’s value of original items from the career of the three-time Formula 1 world champion. More than three decades after his tragic death in Imola in 1994, Senna remains one of the most influential and globally recognized figures in motorsport history.
