(Motorsport-Total.com) – It is the flag that probably no driver wants to see: the black flag. Because for a Formula 1 driver, it means the immediate end of the race. Whoever sees the black flag has committed such a serious rule violation that they are immediately pulled out of the race by the race control and disqualified.

However, it does not occur very often – on the contrary: In the past nearly 20 years, only one driver has been thrown out of the race this way: Nico Hülkenberg.
The German had spun in the first corner of the 2024 Formula 1 race in Brazil and then got stuck on a bump with his Haas. To be able to start again, he accepted outside help from the track marshals – but that is a violation of the regulations.
Thus, Hülkenberg was the first driver since 2007 to see a black flag. Back then, the same misfortune happened to two drivers: In Canada, Renault driver Giancarlo Fisichella and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa ignored the red light at the pit exit and were taken out of the race.

Black Flag in Formula 1: These Drivers Have Seen It
But Formula 1 has already experienced some curious reasons in its rich history why drivers had to be excluded. And the history does not stop at big names. Whether Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost or Nigel Mansell: They have all once been victims of a black flag.
Some ignored the disqualification – with some unpleasant consequences. While Mansell continued driving after his exclusion and later even knocked out championship contender Senna from the race, Schumacher was even completely taken out of the race for two races.
