(Motorsport-Total.com) – After the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring near Budapest, Formula 1 has gone into its summer break. The season will only resume four weeks later at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort (check out the complete race calendar here!). For drivers and teams, this is a welcome breather.

But why does the summer break exist at all, since when, how long does it last, and what rules apply? We explain this in this article.
What is the summer break in Formula 1?
The summer break is a very important phase in the Formula 1 season. Its significance is so great that it is even enshrined in the Formula 1 regulations. And anyone who commits a rule violation during the Formula 1 summer break faces a penalty.
Roughly speaking: The summer break is the time without races between late July/early August and late August. This year, it falls between the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 26 and the Dutch Grand Prix on August 23. No Formula 1 races take place during this period.
What is allowed and what is forbidden during the summer break?
During the summer break, teams and power unit manufacturers must mandatorily close their Formula 1 factories. This is stipulated in the Formula 1 regulations. More precisely: in the operational rules, which have been listed under Section F since 2026.
Formula 1 Fails: These rule changes were a flop
Article F3.1.1 states: “All Formula 1 teams must […] close their factories for 14 consecutive days in the months of July and/or August. Teams must inform the FIA of their planned factory closure no later than 30 days after the first Grand Prix.”
During this factory closure, many activities are only possible to a limited extent. Article F.3.1.2 explains: Work on car design is prohibited; further development and production of parts are also not allowed. No meetings may be scheduled or held. The use of the wind tunnel is also taboo.
Or in short: Competitive operations must cease.
However, not everything is forbidden. Article F3.1.4 points out: Teams are allowed to carry out fundamental work that serves to maintain operations. This includes, for example, maintenance work. Furthermore, damage to the vehicles may be repaired – but only with FIA permission. Anything not related to the Formula 1 team may be carried out as normal.
When exactly do teams have to close their factories?
Formula 1 teams are free to choose when during the summer break they carry out their 14-day factory closure. Most racing teams opt for the two middle weeks to be flexible for post-race work from the previous race and preparations for the next race.
However: Individual teams do not have to take their mandatory break at the same time. Some teams may therefore close earlier, others later.

Interestingly: The summer break was also a topic during the Corona pandemic in the 2020 season, even if the (modified) race calendar might not have looked like it. This was because it had been agreed to move the closure period from July/August to March/April to allow the race season to take place from July without a break.
Why is there a summer break in Formula 1?
The Formula 1 summer break has existed since 20 or more races are driven per year. The summer break aims to ensure that employees get a breather. The explicit summer break rules were created so that no team can gain a competitive advantage during this time.
However, the summer break in Formula 1 also serves to reduce expenses – and it did so long before there was a budget cap in Formula 1. This is because, due to the summer break, teams have to put their development and research activities on hold in between.

The mandated break allows Formula 1 employees to enjoy some free time away from work, go on vacation, and meet family and friends. Afterwards, Formula 1 usually plunges into a stressful end-of-season phase with several closely spaced Grands Prix over several months.

Considering that Formula 1 racing teams practically start their work right after the Christmas break, the summer break is the first real opportunity for many departments to take a break. Many teams therefore also use the summer break as a turning point and shift their work after the summer break to preparations for the following season.
What happens during the Formula 1 summer break?
What happens during the summer break depends entirely on each department of a Formula 1 team. In principle, however, most work is suspended for 14 days. This definitely applies to areas directly related to the performance and administration of a Formula 1 team.
Only a few departments are allowed to continue as normal. These include those that do not directly influence vehicle performance, such as marketing, accounting, and the legal department.
Outside the two-week lockout period, Formula 1 teams may proceed as normal, in accordance with the rules for the respective racing season.
Do Formula 1 drivers also take a summer break?
Formula 1 drivers also get a break. Usually, immediately after the last race before the summer break, they complete the usual debriefings and final PR appointments. Then the drivers can also go on vacation. They often return to their teams’ factories in the week before the first race after the summer break.
Former Formula 1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne describes it as a balancing act: “You take time to rest, but you also have to make sure you’re ready to attack from the first race.”
“At this point in the year, you definitely want to take some time off. You want to switch off from racing, because the season is very intense. The pressure is high, media attention is high, and it’s very demanding because you’re traveling a lot and have to drive many races in a row.”
“At the same time, the season is not over yet. It’s only a short break, and after the break, many races are still to come, so you can’t completely relax. You think about the second part of the season and have to make sure you don’t lose focus on it.”
When does Formula 1 return from the summer break?
The 2026 Formula 1 season will resume from August 21 to 23 with the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort. This race marks the start of the final phase of the season, with a total of twelve remaining race weekends.
