What qualifications are necessary and which skills are particularly valued are explained in this article about the current Formula 1 team principals and their roles in a modern Grand Prix team.

What is a team principal in Formula 1?
Simply put: The team principal is the boss of a Formula 1 team. This makes the hierarchy clear. In many cases, the team principal is the top decision-maker and primarily responsible for the performance of the racing team.
In the past, team founders often took on the role of team principal themselves and were sometimes even owners of the racing team. Examples include Colin Chapman at Lotus, Bruce McLaren at McLaren, or Frank Williams at Williams.
More than that: Chapman was also the designer of his team, Williams worked actively in the garage, and McLaren even competed as a driver himself.
Nowadays, this is no longer the case: modern Formula 1 team principals no longer get their hands dirty and certainly do not sit in the Formula 1 race car themselves. They are usually employed executives and may hold shares in the team, nothing more.
The fact that even Formula 1 team principals are now employees shows that racing teams usually no longer operate in isolation. Many teams are part of larger companies and serve as a flagship for a corporation.

Examples: Ferrari, as a car manufacturer, has maintained a racing team for decades, with close cooperation between the factory and the team. Red Bull Racing, on the other hand, belongs to a corporation whose main business has nothing to do with motorsport.
Between these extremes, there are many other team constellations – always with effects on the role of the team principal, who is the central person responsible in every racing team. The team principal must ensure that the results are right and that the investment in the team pays off.
What are the tasks of a Formula 1 team principal?
The team principal is the public face of the racing team. He gives press interviews, represents the team in political and sporting discussions, and is the contact person in meetings with the FIA, the race stewards, or other racing teams.
Diplomatic skill and business acumen are among the most important qualities of a team principal. He must represent interests and make decisions that often have far-reaching consequences.
Another key task is leading the team. The team principal ensures a structured and motivating work environment. While a technical background can be helpful, in everyday life he must not get lost in details. Instead, he must keep an eye on the big picture.

A central decision for the team principal is: What does he do himself, and which tasks does he delegate? A Formula 1 team consists of highly specialized experts such as race engineers, strategists, and mechanics. The team principal’s task is to bring the best talents into the team, create an optimal working environment, and trust his employees.
Some team principals follow different management philosophies. While some merely hold the strings, others actively use their expertise in certain areas to directly support the team.

Marcin Budkowski
Team: Cadillac

Marcin Budkowski was born on April 23, 1977, in Warsaw and holds Polish and French citizenship. He studied at the renowned Ecole Polytechnique in Paris as well as at Imperial College London, specializing in aerospace engineering and aerodynamics.
Budkowski began his Formula 1 career in 2001 as an aerodynamicist at Prost. After the team folded, he moved to Ferrari, where between 2002 and 2007 he worked in areas including computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel testing. He then went to McLaren and rose to head of the aerodynamics department.
In 2014, Budkowski switched to the other side of the Formula 1 business and joined the FIA. There he eventually became head of the technical Formula 1 department, gaining detailed insights into the technical developments of the racing teams.
His move to Renault was received controversially: From 2018, Budkowski worked in a senior position for the factory team and was responsible for large parts of the organization in Enstone. After the renaming to Alpine, he remained part of the leadership until the collaboration ended in early 2022.
After several years without a fixed leadership position in a Formula 1 team, Budkowski returned to the “king class” in 2026: Cadillac hired him in August as successor to Graeme Lowdon. This marked Budkowski’s first official role as team principal.
Mattia Binotto
Team: Audi

Mattia Binotto was born on November 3, 1969, in Lausanne, Switzerland, to Italian parents. He studied mechanical engineering in Lausanne and then automotive engineering in Modena.
His professional career is mainly associated with one name: Ferrari. In 1995, Binotto started at Scuderia as an engine engineer in the test team, and two years later moved to the race team.
During the successful Ferrari era with Michael Schumacher, Binotto climbed the ranks within the engine department. Later, he took on leadership roles in the development of Ferrari power units.
In 2016, Ferrari appointed Binotto as Technical Director. In early 2019, he took the next big career step: succeeding Maurizio Arrivabene as team principal of the Scuderia. Under his leadership, Ferrari returned to the top after a difficult 2020 and fought for the championship at least temporarily in 2022. However, Binotto stepped down after the season and left Ferrari after 28 years.
In summer 2024, he returned to Formula 1 and took overall responsibility for the future Audi factory team. Initially, Binotto prepared Audi’s entry with the former Sauber team, coordinating locations including Hinwil, Neuburg, and Bicester. Since 2026, he has been CEO of the Audi Formula 1 team.
After Jonathan Wheatley left, Binotto additionally took over the role of team principal and thus the overall sporting responsibility.
Adrian Newey
Team: Aston Martin

Adrian Newey was born on December 26, 1958, in England and studied aerospace engineering at the University of Southampton. Unlike most current Formula 1 team principals, he first made a name for himself not as a manager but as one of the most successful race car designers in Formula 1 history.
After initial stints in motorsport and successes in the US IndyCar series, Newey designed his first Formula 1 cars for March and Leyton House in the late 1980s. In 1991, he moved as chief designer to Williams. There, under his significant involvement, some of the most technically dominant Formula 1 cars of the 1990s were created. Between 1992 and 1997, Williams won five constructors’ championships with Newey.
In 1997, Newey moved to McLaren and quickly achieved success there as well: Mika Häkkinen became world champion in 1998 and 1999, and McLaren won the constructors’ championship in 1998.
At the end of 2005, he moved to the then young Red Bull team. As Technical Director, Newey played a key role in the rise of the team. Red Bull won four consecutive drivers’ and constructors’ titles with Sebastian Vettel from 2010 to 2013. With Max Verstappen, another successful era began in 2021.
After nearly two decades at Red Bull, Newey announced his departure in 2024 and joined Aston Martin as a team shareholder in 2025. Originally, he was to focus mainly on technical development. However, for the 2026 season, his responsibilities were expanded: Newey also took over the role of team principal.
This is the first classic team principal role in his long Formula 1 career, although his focus remains on the technical development of the race car.
Steve Nielsen
Team: Alpine

Steve Nielsen, born on July 2, 1964, in England, has been working in international motorsport for about four decades. His focus has always been on management tasks.
Nielsen started in 1986 at the original Lotus team in spare parts logistics. In 1991, he moved to Tyrrell, where from 1994 he was deputy team principal. He then went to Renault and was instrumental as sporting director in the world championship successes with Fernando Alonso.
In the 2010s, Nielsen went through various stations in Formula 1: he worked first for Caterham, then Toro Rosso, and finally Williams.
At the end of 2017, he decided on a change: Nielsen moved to the Formula 1 promoter and helped with the commercial development of the racing series. In 2023, Nielsen changed again when he took on new tasks at the FIA.
In June 2025, Alpine team boss Flavio Briatore brought Nielsen back to the Formula 1 team from Enstone. There, Nielsen works from September 1 as team manager under Briatore, so he is not a classic team principal, even though he fulfills that role’s task profile.

Laurent Mekies
Team: Red Bull

Laurent Mekies, born on April 28, 1977, in Tours, France, is an experienced engineer and motorsport manager who served as team principal of Racing Bulls in Formula 1 from 2024 and has been team principal at Red Bull since July 2025.
His motorsport career began after studying at Ecole Centrale Paris, one of France’s most prestigious engineering schools, with a focus on vehicle technology and aerodynamics.
Mekies started his career at Arrows in Formula 1 as an aerodynamicist. After the team closed in 2002, he moved to Minardi, the predecessor of Toro Rosso (now Racing Bulls). There, he quickly rose to chief engineer before the team was taken over by Red Bull.
In 2014, Mekies switched “to the other side” to the FIA, where he was safety officer and deputy race director before taking over as sporting director at Ferrari in 2018. In this role, he was responsible for the team’s strategic direction and communication with the FIA. His ability to combine technical expertise with management skills strengthened his reputation as one of the key figures in the paddock.
In 2024, Mekies returned to his roots as team principal of Racing Bulls. His task was to develop the team, which acts as a sister team to Red Bull, into a more competitive racing team and strengthen the connection to Red Bull’s successes.
In July 2025, Mekies was appointed internally as successor to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner after his departure.
Alan Permane
Team: Racing Bulls

Alan Permane, born on February 4, 1967, in Walton-on-Thames (England), is one of the most experienced Formula 1 engineers. He has been active in the “king class” for over 30 years and has held senior positions at various teams during this time.
Permane’s career began in 1989 as a test and electronics engineer at Benetton, where he worked until 2006 – then under the name Renault – as a race engineer. He looked after drivers including Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella.
In 2007, Permane was promoted internally to chief race engineer and was given the sporting leadership of the team in 2011. At the end of 2023, Permane left the Enstone team in England after 35 years at his own request.
In 2024, Permane joined Racing Bulls and was appointed race director there. In this role, he was responsible for significant progress in the team’s performance and worked closely with team principal Laurent Mekies and Racing Bulls CEO Peter Bayer.
Because Mekies moved to Red Bull in July 2025 as successor to Christian Horner, Permane was promoted to team principal at Racing Bulls – his biggest task in Formula 1 so far.
Ayao Komatsu

Ayao Komatsu, born on January 28, 1976, in Japan, is an experienced engineer and motorsport manager who has officially been Haas team principal since the end of 2023. He is the first Japanese to take on the role of team principal in Formula 1 and brings impressive technical and strategic expertise to the leadership of the American racing team.
After studying engineering in the UK, Komatsu began his motorsport career in 2003 in Formula 1. He initially worked at British American Racing (BAR), then at Renault, and later at Lotus, where he achieved great success as a race engineer. Among his protégés was Romain Grosjean, with whom he achieved several podiums. His analytical thinking and understanding of race strategy made him a sought-after figure in the paddock.
In 2016, Komatsu moved to Haas, which shortly thereafter made its Formula 1 debut. Initially, he was chief engineer for track operations and played a central role in building the technical structures of the new team. Komatsu was instrumental in establishing Haas as a solid midfield team and effectively utilizing the collaboration with Ferrari.
In 2023, Komatsu was appointed Haas team principal. In this role, he is responsible for the strategic and operational management of the racing team and represents the team both at the racetrack and in political matters of Formula 1. With his technical background and long experience, he aims to further develop Haas and make it more competitive in the long term.
James Vowles
Team: Williams

James Vowles, born on June 20, 1979, in England, is a respected motorsport engineer and team principal who took over leadership of Williams in Formula 1 in 2023.
After studying engineering at the University of Cambridge and earning a master’s degree at Cranfield University, Vowles entered Formula 1 in 2001. His career began at British American Racing (BAR), which later became Honda, Brawn, and finally Mercedes.
As a leading engineer, Vowles played a central role in the team’s strategy department, acting at the interface between technology and race strategy. He made a decisive contribution at Brawn in 2009 when the team sensationally won the drivers’ and constructors’ championships.
After Mercedes took over in 2010, he remained with the team and was chief strategist until 2022. During his time at Mercedes, he contributed significantly to the team’s dominance, which won eight consecutive constructors’ titles from 2014 to 2021. His strategic decisions in races were often key to the successes of drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
In January 2023, Vowles was appointed team principal of Williams to lead the traditional racing team back to former strength. Vowles’ appointment marks the beginning of a new era for Williams, which is preparing for a future with new technical and personnel investments.
Frederic Vasseur

Frederic Vasseur, born on May 28, 1968, in Draveil, France, is an experienced engineer and motorsport manager who has been Ferrari team principal in Formula 1 since January 2023. His career began in engineering, where he studied mechanical engineering at the renowned Ecole Centrale Paris and developed an early passion for motorsport.
After his studies, Vasseur founded the ASM team (later ART Grand Prix) in 1996, which won numerous titles in Formula 3. Under his leadership, the team established itself as a talent factory, producing drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
In 2016, Vasseur took the step into Formula 1 and became team principal at Renault when the French manufacturer returned after a longer break. After just one year, he left the team due to internal differences and took over the leadership of the Sauber team in 2017, which later competed under the name Alfa Romeo. Vasseur led the team through a phase of change and established it as a solid midfield force in Formula 1.
In January 2023, Vasseur succeeded Mattia Binotto as Ferrari team principal. He thus took over the leadership of one of the most prestigious teams in motorsport. Vasseur’s technical background, leadership qualities, and long experience make him one of the key figures in modern Formula 1.
Andrea Stella

Andrea Stella, born on February 22, 1971, in Orvieto, Italy, is a respected engineer and motorsport manager who has been McLaren team principal in Formula 1 since 2023. Stella began his career in the 1990s as an engineer at Ferrari after earning a degree in aerospace engineering at the University of La Sapienza in Rome.
At Ferrari, Stella initially worked as a performance engineer and looked after Michael Schumacher during his successful years. From 2002, he was promoted to race engineer and worked closely with Kimi Räikkönen and later Fernando Alonso. His technical expertise and ability to work with drivers at the highest level made him an indispensable figure within the team.
In 2015, Stella moved to McLaren, where he initially served as head of driver performance. He played a key role in restructuring the team and was later promoted to racing director. His extensive experience and strategic thinking contributed significantly to making McLaren more competitive again.
In December 2022, Stella was appointed McLaren team principal after Andreas Seidl left the team. In 2024, McLaren won the constructors’ championship for the first time in many years under Stella’s leadership.
Toto Wolff

Toto Wolff, a former racing driver from Austria, is one of the most influential personalities in motorsport. Born in 1972, Wolff celebrated his 50th birthday in 2022. At Mercedes, he is not only team principal but also holds shares in the team and is responsible for motorsport at Mercedes, similar to his predecessor Norbert Haug.
Wolff’s motorsport career began as a racing driver. He competed in Formula Ford races in Germany and Austria and later moved to sports car racing. He then retired from active racing and turned to managing racing teams. An important station was his role as director at the Williams team in Formula 1.
However, his greatest career achievement is undoubtedly his work as team principal and co-owner of Mercedes in Formula 1. Under his leadership, the team developed into a dominant force in Formula 1 and won eight consecutive constructors’ championships from 2014 to 2021. During this time, he led drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to a total of seven drivers’ world championships.
Privately, Wolff is married to former racing driver Susie Wolff (née Stoddart). After her active racing career, Susie Wolff also found her way into management and was team principal of the Venturi team in Formula E from 2018 to 2022. Since 2023, she has been managing director of the F1 Academy, a racing series focused on promoting women in motorsport.
