(Motorsport-Total.com) – Fernando Alonso has still not publicly confirmed whether he will continue to race for Aston Martin in the top class in the upcoming 2027 Formula 1 season. An announcement at the upcoming home race in Madrid this weekend would actually be expected, but the Spaniard emphasizes that there will be no announcement in the coming days.

“No,” he answers clearly and decisively to the question of whether fans can expect an announcement about his future this weekend in Madrid. That means: The future of the 45-year-old remains open.
Meanwhile, Aston Martin is taking the situation lightly: “We respect that Fernando is asking for time to think to make sure he makes the right decision for himself,” emphasizes team principal Mike Krack. “I think with a driver with so much experience and such a track record, it is simply respectful to acknowledge that and wait.”
An extension with Alonso would be the team’s preferred option, which is going through a tough time in 2026. The team started the new regulations with great ambitions but had to endure a crash like no other.
Although they were recently able to improve with an upgrade and scored two points in Zandvoort, in Monza they fell behind Cadillac again in terms of performance.

A miracle is not in sight for 2027, so the question arises whether Alonso wants to endure another season at Aston Martin – even though he has so far hinted that he would rather stop after a successful season.

“We know where we want to go,” says Krack about the driver pairing for the upcoming season, where Lance Stroll, as the son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, is still considered a given. “I am quite confident that we will find a good solution – and then we will be well positioned for the future.”
Alonso is Plan A for the team. But what if that does not come to fruition? “If Plan A doesn’t work, we will look out for Plan B,” says Krack.
Fernando Alonso switched to Aston Martin before the 2023 Formula 1 season and had some successes, especially in the first year with several podiums. Since then, however, the team has gone backwards.
