Previously, Somerville had worked at the FIA as head of the aerodynamics department. His role at Alpine is “Deputy Technical Director.” David Sanchez remains the Technical Director.
Our sister portal Motorsport.com had already reported on the deal between Somerville and Alpine in November of last year. It should be noted that Somerville is no stranger to Formula 1 outside of his time at the FIA.

Before that, the aerodynamicist had already worked at Williams, Toyota, and Lotus. At the motorsport world federation, Somerville was responsible, among other things, for establishing the current rules.
“I haven’t been part of a competitive motorsport team for several years,” said Somerville in the official press release. “I look forward to the opportunity to dive back into the action, chase milliseconds, fight for points with our competitors, and hopefully win a few trophies.”

At Alpine, Somerville will be confronted with a few old companions. The aerodynamicist had already worked with Managing Director Steve Nielsen at the FIA and in Formula 1 management. After his stint at Toyota, Somerville was present in the Enstone team at times in the early 2010s.
At Williams, the 57-year-old not only worked on several Formula 1 cars. For example, the 1999 Le Mans winner, the BMW V12 LMR, bears the signature of the Brit. Touring car fans can attribute some characteristics of the legendary Volvo 850 from the BTCC to the aerodynamicist.
Alpine is currently fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. With 23 points on the board, they have already collected more points than in the entire 2025 season.
