(Motorsport-Total.com) – The hybrid era has brought Fernando Alonso no luck in Formula 1 so far. Sporting-wise, things have rarely gone smoothly for the Spaniard since 2014, and racing hasn’t really been fun for him either. Instead, he says that Formula 1 has lost a decade of pure racing due to hybrid technology.

For him, it is also clear that the targeted adjustments for the 2027 season will not help solve the main problems of the current regulations. “Wait,” is the Spaniard’s answer to the question of whether possible rule changes for the upcoming season will help or if one has to wait for the next regulation cycle.
“The DNA of these power units always remains the same. And it will always be rewarded for driving slowly in the corners,” he says. So nothing will fundamentally change in 2027? “I don’t think so,” he waves off.
Lost real racing
Even before the race in Miami, the FIA had made some minor adjustments. For 2027, another step is planned to address the biggest concerns in the paddock regarding the current regulations.
There is a fundamental agreement to change the ratio between the internal combustion engine and electric power to a 60-40 split in favor of the combustion engine.
The technical details still need to be finalized, but discussions are focusing on fuel flow to bring the combustion engine more to the forefront while simultaneously reducing the share of electric power by 50 kilowatts.
Formula 1 fails: These rule changes were a flop

The two-stage changes at least show that the FIA is listening to the drivers’ criticism, although Alonso does not believe this was ever the biggest problem.

“I mean, they always listen. The thing is: the world has moved towards electrification or thought that was the future. But that cannot be transferred to motorsport. Motorsport is a different caliber.”
“Now we are going a little bit back to 60-40 and maybe in the future even less [electric power]. Unfortunately, we have had this period since 2014 with the turbo era, and now even more, in which we have lost almost a decade or even longer of real racing,” says the Aston Martin driver.
Evasive maneuvers instead of overtaking
The current regulations have indeed led to significantly more overtaking maneuvers, but Alonso argues that alone does not mean much. Asked where on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, where Formula 1 is visiting this weekend, the best overtaking opportunities are, the Spaniard explains that overtaking nowadays is no longer an art.
“On the straights, if you have more battery than the others. That becomes very easy. And then it is no longer overtaking, but just an evasive maneuver.”
“If you have more battery than the others, then the others clip, so the power is reduced by 500 hp. Then suddenly you have 500 hp more than the other, you perform an evasive maneuver and pass the car.”
