(Motorsport-Total.com) – What will the Formula 1 race calendar for the 2027 season look like? There is no definitive answer to this question yet. But: This article describes all known information about Formula 1 2027 so far.

Perhaps the most important question right at the start: How many Grands Prix will there be in 2027? Probably no more than 24 – as has been the case since 2024. Because Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali considers this to be “the right number”.
He said in 2023: “It is the number demanded by the market. I would say it is the right balance for the complex logistics and the people involved. And I would also say it is the number we should keep stable for a long time.” Whether this will remain the case for 2027 is still unclear.
Of the 24 Formula 1 tracks in the 2026 season, only one does not have a follow-up contract for 2027: Zandvoort’s Formula 1 exit after the 2026 Grand Prix is already sealed – the Dutch organizers are no longer seeking a further contract extension.
But: Barcelona will also be dropped from the calendar for 2027. However, the Spanish race track will return in 2028 and alternate annually with Spa-Francorchamps – 2027 is Belgium’s turn.
Conversely, this means: 22 2026 tracks are confirmed for 2027. Two new tracks will be added. The complete list and the corresponding contract durations can be found further down in this overview.
Are there new tracks in Formula 1 in 2027?
Yes. With Portimao, a former Formula 1 circuit is making its comeback on the calendar. Portimao served as a test track for years and was awarded a Formula 1 race for the first time during the Corona pandemic: in 2020 and 2021, Portimao hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix. The new two-year contract sees Portimao feature on the Formula 1 calendar until 2028 inclusive.
In addition, the comeback of Istanbul Park is perfect. Turkey returns to the calendar after a five-year break. The race track had already briefly returned to the calendar during the Corona years 2020 and 2021, after having been represented from 2005 to 2011. The new contract runs until 2031.
Will current tracks be dropped from the calendar in 2027?
Yes. Zandvoort will no longer be on the Formula 1 calendar after 2026 at its own request. In addition, the Spanish Grand Prix of Barcelona-Catalunya in Barcelona will be rotated out as planned.
Where will the Formula 1 season opener take place in 2027?
That is still unclear. But by contract, Australia is entitled to host the season opener in five instances until 2035. This means after 2025 and 2026: there are three more opportunities for Melbourne to host the first Grand Prix of the year.

Already at its Formula 1 debut in 1996, Melbourne was the venue for the season opener – and remained so until 2005. From 2007 to 2009 and again from 2011 to 2019, the Australian Grand Prix marked the first race weekend, and then again only in 2025 and 2026.
Where will the Formula 1 final take place in 2027?
At the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. This was sealed with the latest contract extension: The circuit in the United Arab Emirates is set as the venue for the season finale until 2030.
Formula 1 has been racing in Abu Dhabi since 2009. Since then, the Grand Prix was only not the final race from 2011 to 2013. Sebastian Vettel (2010), Lewis Hamilton (2014), Nico Rosberg (2016), Max Verstappen (2021) and Lando Norris (2025) have all become Formula 1 world champions in Abu Dhabi. In all other years, the decision was made before the last Grand Prix of the year.

How many sprint races will there be in 2027 and where?

Will there be a German Grand Prix again in 2027?
Probably not. Despite Audi’s entry into the 2026 season, there are currently no signs of a Formula 1 comeback on German soil. While Hockenheimring and Nürburgring would in principle be suitable as venues for races, they have had no Formula 1 ambitions for years.

The reason: Both race tracks are dependent on external funds to be able to financially manage a Grand Prix. Nothing has changed in this regard.
Hockenheim last hosted the German Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2019. The Nürburgring last hosted the one-off Eifel Grand Prix in 2020.
How the Formula 1 calendar is approved:
The race dates for the Formula 1 season in the respective next year are first negotiated by the rights holder Liberty Media with the race tracks. The teams are usually involved in these negotiations and are continuously informed about progress. However, the teams have no decision-making power.
Once a first draft is ready, it is usually published by the rights holder. This draft often still contains one or more “asterisks” – for example, if a contract with a race track has not yet been signed, but an agreement is foreseeable.
Once all contracts are finalized and the last “asterisk” has been eliminated, the rights holder submits the calendar draft to the FIA World Motorsport Council. Only when its 26 members have approved it (this is usually a purely formal act) will the Formula 1 calendar for the respective next season be officially published by the FIA.

The World Council usually meets four times a year, including in October and December. Earlier ratification is possible, see the announcement for 2025 with a lead time of almost eight months.
In practice, however, the Formula 1 calendar has usually only been officially announced and confirmed after the December meeting (shortly before the FIA’s annual closing gala with the Formula 1 World Championship awards ceremony). Only then are all Grand Prix dates 100 percent binding.
