(Motorsport-Total.com) – Williams is sticking with Alex Albon even in difficult times. The traditional team has extended the Thai driver’s contract until the end of 2027, sending a clear signal. Despite a disappointing 2026 season so far, Albon remains one of the key pillars of the long-term rebuild in Grove.

The extension comes at a time when sporting progress has recently stalled. After the significant upswing in recent years, Williams has so far been unable to meet expectations in the current season. Internally, however, the team remains committed to its long-term project and continues to see Albon as one of the crucial building blocks for the future.
The 30-year-old joined Williams at the beginning of 2022 and quickly became the face of the rebuild. Together with team principal James Vowles, he not only pushed development on the track but also played an important role behind the scenes. Williams has invested heavily in personnel, infrastructure, technologies, and work processes in recent years to return to the top of Formula 1 in the medium term.
The path upwards stalls somewhat
That this path requires time is shown precisely by the 2026 season. After a successful previous year, Williams has so far failed to confirm the upward trend. The contract extension therefore makes it clear that those responsible do not question the chosen course despite the current results.
“Since I joined Williams in 2022, this team has changed incredibly,” says Albon. “A difficult year does not tell the whole story. It even motivates me more to continue working together with the factory and our fans to achieve great things.”
For the Thai driver, the current form crisis is no reason to doubt the shared direction. “Our story is not over yet. My full focus is on doing everything to bring Williams forward again,” he explains.

Albon as a key pillar of the upswing
That Williams is building on Albon in the long term is hardly surprising. The Thai was one of the architects of the strong 2025 season, when several fifth places laid the foundation for eighth place in the drivers’ standings with a total of 73 points. At the same time, Williams celebrated its most successful season since 2016 and seemed to have finally caught up with the midfield.
Albon has also secured a firm place in the team’s history books. At the Spanish Grand Prix, he made his 96th start for Williams, overtaking Nigel Mansell as the record holder. A few weeks later, in Budapest, he already celebrated his 100th Grand Prix for the traditional racing team.

For team principal James Vowles, the contract extension is therefore much more than a personnel decision. “I am very pleased that Alex and Williams are continuing our shared path,” says the Brit. Albon has been a leader of the transformation process since day one and is one of the best drivers in the current Formula 1 field.
“We still have many common goals we want to achieve,” emphasizes Vowles. The extension is an expression of mutual trust and the conviction that Williams is on the right track despite the difficult 2026 season. Especially with a view to the new regulations and the 50th team anniversary next year, Albon is to lead the team back towards the top group.
