(Motorsport-Total.com) – David Coulthard sees little room for George Russell in the fight for the 2026 World Championship title. The ex-driver and Formula 1 expert emphasizes that the Mercedes driver absolutely must beat his teammate Kimi Antonelli at the Spanish Grand Prix to preserve his title chances.

“He has to show that he can get pole in Barcelona, and assuming the car is fast enough, he just has to beat Kimi,” says Coulthard on the podcast Up To Speed. His assessment is clear: “Let’s be honest: if he doesn’t beat Kimi, it’s over. No World Championship.”
Co-host Will Buxton also finds clear words on the current situation of the Brit in the Mercedes team: “You can say for so long: ‘All I need is the car. All I need is the chance.’ Well, you know what? You have the car. You have the chance. And you’re currently getting your ass kicked.”
Antonelli Makes History, Russell Loses Ground
While the focus is increasingly shifting to the internal team duel at Mercedes, Kimi Antonelli has recently made headlines. The 19-year-old won the Monaco Grand Prix, becoming the youngest winner in the history of the traditional race. After a turbulent race with a chaotic start, safety car phase, and restart, he converted his pole into his fifth consecutive victory.
George Russell, on the other hand, had a difficult weekend in Monaco. After several penalties, he fell far back in the race and finished only in 13th place outside the points. In the World Championship, he consequently slipped behind Lewis Hamilton to third place. After six races this season, Russell is already 68 points behind.

Mixed Season for Russell Despite Individual Highlights
The season started promisingly for the Brit: Russell won the season opener in Australia and the sprint in China. Since then, however, he has remained without another victory.
In the following races, various problems prevented better results. In China, technical difficulties in qualifying hampered his chances. In Japan, a safety car phase cost him a better strategy, and in Canada, despite leading temporarily, he had to retire due to technical defects.
Even if Russell doesn’t consistently lack performance, the current balance sheet speaks volumes: While he is dropping points, Antonelli is further extending his lead as the youngest driver ever to lead a World Championship.
