(Motorsport-Total.com) – Formula 1 is expected to have more sprint races in the 2027 season. “That will happen when we announce the calendar very, very soon,” reveals Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali in an interview with Sky Sports.

In the current season, six sprint weekends are on the schedule, and in 2027 the number is expected to rise to nine or ten – the right path for Domenicali: “If we think back to the beginning, people were always skeptical about what we were doing, and I think we have the duty to be brave in a way and to think outside the box,” he says.
“With the 150,000 people we had on Friday in Silverstone – if you don’t offer them something with action, that would be wrong,” says the Formula 1 boss. “That’s why I think this is the right way, and we are currently in the process of announcing a larger number for the future.”
In 2026, Formula 1 will hold its sprint races in Shanghai, Miami, Montreal, Silverstone, Zandvoort, and Singapore. Which races will be sprint weekends in 2027 will be announced soon, but one location is already certain: Monza.
“We have reached an agreement that from next year we will have the sprint race for three years,” confirms Geronimo La Russa, president of the Italian Automobile Club ACI. Thus, Monza will host a short race alongside the actual Grand Prix until 2029 inclusive.

All winners of sprint races in Formula 1
The Italian traditional track already hosted the second sprint race in Formula 1 history in 2021. At that time, Silverstone, Monza, and Sao Paulo were chosen as test venues for the new format, which then still decided the starting grid of the Grand Prix. Since then, Monza has not had a sprint race.
The race was won at that time by Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, but the race was then surprisingly won by Daniel Ricciardo, who, together with Lando Norris, celebrated a double victory for McLaren.
Sprint races have been part of Formula 1 since the 2021 season. Initially, three events were held, increasing to six from 2023, with the format being refined over the years. From 2027, the next level is to be launched.
