The renowned Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey provides insights into how the Aston Martin team uses AI systems to accelerate development processes and gain deeper insights from complex data sets.

According to Newey, the use of AI applications at Aston Martin is divided into two fundamental core areas: business and engineering.

While the technology primarily contributes to optimizing internal processes on the business side, Newey’s focus is clearly on the technical side. “As far as the business side is concerned, to be honest, I am not an expert. I know they make a big difference in how our systems run, but I am not the best to explain the details,” he admits openly.

“On the engineering side, however, it is both enormously useful and very important, especially in simulation. They work closely with our engineers to push the boundaries of what is possible,” he says at AstonMartinF1.com.

Specialized Algorithms Instead of ChatGPT

A common misconception is equating industrial AI with consumer-oriented tools like ChatGPT. Newey clarifies that the technology used in Formula 1 follows a completely different logic: “It is something entirely different,” he emphasizes.

“Most people imagine AI as pattern recognition combined with an internet search. What we do is the use of AI and machine learning in highly specialized roles that do not rely on the internet at all.”

The systems instead operate in a closed loop. They are fed exclusively with the team’s highly sensitive internal data. “We feed them with our own data – from wind tunnel, CFD, and racetrack – and use AI to recognize patterns, correlations, and trends that a human might not see quickly enough.”

“That helps us make better decisions in the development of the car,” says Newey.

The Factor of Computing Power and “Artificial Intuition”

The primary advantage of AI in the engineering process lies in its enormous processing speed: “Its main advantage is computing power. It can do in minutes what a human would not be able to do in the available time,” he says.

Despite this massive computing power, current systems hit a crucial limit that the team now wants to break through in research: the lack of human intuition. While algorithms are excellent at finding known patterns in existing data, experienced engineers have the ability to make creative leaps of thought.

Here Newey sees the biggest challenge for the future: “The really interesting challenge is to give AI something like intuition. Humans are very good at it – recognizing patterns, making leaps of thought – but that is exactly what is hardest to define and code. That is the limit we are currently working on.”
