Alpine Statement

An Alpine statement on the decision reads: “We welcome the FIA’s decision to declare our ‘Right of Review’ admissible following the final classification of last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.”

“Consequently, the stewards have overturned the two five-second penalties imposed on car No. 10, thereby reinstating the team’s third place.”

“We would like to thank the FIA and Formula One Management for their transparency and cooperation throughout the appeal process, as well as for this decision.”

“The team’s focus is now fully on this weekend’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix and on achieving the best possible result with both cars.”

Only Gasly’s penalty overturned

Important: Only Pierre Gasly’s penalty will be withdrawn. Otherwise, nothing changes in the result. Because drivers like Oscar Piastri or George Russell have already served their penalties during the race, there is no possibility to correct them retrospectively.

You can find the updated result here.

Reasoning

The stewards’ decision comprises a total of seven pages and 49 points. Point 43 is crucial, stating verbatim:

“In this case, the sole task of the stewards after accepting the appeal […] is to examine whether car No. 10 exceeded the 60 km/h speed limit in the pit lane. We find that this was not the case.”

This means: Gasly was not too fast in the pit lane. Therefore, both penalties are withdrawn, and the Frenchman gets his third place back.

Piastri: “Shouldn’t happen in Formula 1”

We are still waiting for the Alpine verdict. Oscar Piastri says about the fact that presumably several penalties in Monaco were wrongly issued: “Something like that shouldn’t happen in Formula 1.”

“In the race, in my opinion, it was quite obvious that something strange was going on,” said the McLaren driver.

“Normally, there might be one or two cars in the same race that get a penalty for speeding in the pit lane – but not seven or eight or however many it was.”

Piastri himself was also among the penalized drivers.

Weather

At the start of the weekend, we’re taking a quick look at the weather. The emphasis this time is indeed on “quick,” as rain is not in sight for the coming days. We should experience a Grand Prix completely in the dry.

Verstappen: I understand the politics behind it

Max Verstappen commented in Barcelona on the rule changes from 2027 and explained: “Of course, I would have wished that next year would already be like 2028.”

“But I also understand that political aspects sometimes play a role,” emphasizes Verstappen, adding: “At least the changes they are making are going in the right direction.”

“That’s a good thing,” said the four-time world champion, who is one of the biggest critics of the 2026 rules. However, he can now at least live with the changes for 2027.
