Lawson uses Ricciardo’s engine
Because the question is always asked with a driver change: Lawson has to use the engine parts from Ricciardo, who himself only took over the quota from de Vries a few weeks ago.
Specifically: If, for example, Lawson were to install a new battery, he would receive a grid penalty, even though it is his personal first race. You can find the overview of all engine penalties 2023 here!
Today 32 years ago …
… a certain Michael Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut in Belgium. Not much more needs to be said about that, right? But of course, this fact should not go unmentioned in today’s ticker! Here is a little video about it towards the end of the day:
Starting number
A small side note: Liam Lawson will compete this weekend with the starting number 40. Our colleagues on site have found this out. Lawson already used the number in his two Friday appearances for AlphaTauri last year.
Norris: Long runs still need to improve
The Brit was the fastest today with a 1:11.330 and says it was “a decent day.” “We got into a good rhythm and found a reasonable balance with the car,” he says satisfied.
“With little fuel we look good, but with a lot of fuel we still need to work a bit,” he emphasizes. Teammate Piastri had no long run after his crash in FT2 – and therefore even more work ahead.
“It’s a shame to end the day like this. I just went a bit too fast into turn 3 and lost the rear,” he reports. Apart from that, his pace looked “pretty good” today, he says satisfied.
And at least his day did not end in the hospital …

P3 for Albon: Williams remains cautious
The car felt “good,” reports Alexander Albon after P3 today. Still, he tempers expectations and reminds that Williams has often looked better on a Friday than during the rest of the weekend.
“I’m sure everyone will make a big step forward tomorrow,” he emphasizes and makes clear: “I don’t think today’s pace is representative of the field.” His feeling is still “pretty positive,” says Albon.
Dave Robson adds: “The pace of the car was not too bad today, but it’s always difficult to know [where you stand], since the cars here don’t always have free laps and the tires are difficult to manage.”
Let’s see how it goes tomorrow.
More info on the Ricciardo situation
The big question is, of course, how long the Australian will be out. Since the next race is already scheduled for the coming weekend in Italy, it is rather unlikely that Ricciardo will be fit again by then.
Helmut Marko has also revealed that a comeback by Nyck de Vries was not considered. In addition, our colleagues on site have found out that Ricciardo is to be operated on by Doctor Xavier Mir.
Mir has made a name for himself especially in MotoGP, where he has already operated on numerous motorcycle stars. He also operated Lance Stroll before the season after his bicycle accident, in which the Canadian also broke his hands.
