“Frustrating” Friday for Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton will start later in the sprint from pole. The Brit was 0.011 seconds faster than championship leader Kimi Antonelli in yesterday’s qualifying. “Today was frustrating for us,” says Andrew Shovlin from Mercedes.

“Although we have managed well in recent races to bring the initial setup to a good level, today we felt we had fallen behind,” he admits.

“During the sessions, we made changes to give the car more stability. Even in SQ3 of the sprint qualifying, we still felt the front was too strong. That is not ideal in such gusty wind.”

“Additionally, there is a speed difference that we still need to understand and that cost us a lot of time on the straights,” says Shovlin, who reminds: “We are not allowed to make any changes before tomorrow’s sprint.”

“However, we are working hard to get these problems under control and find a better setup before the Grand Prix qualifying,” he announces.

Lindblad and Sainz warned

One more note from yesterday’s sprint qualifying: Alexander Albon and Arvid Lindblad received a warning because they were too slow during a cooldown lap.

Albon exceeded the allowed maximum time by 4.6 seconds, Lindblad even by 14.4 seconds. Ultimately, the race stewards settled for a warning in both cases and explained:

“The race stewards acknowledge that the 2026 season vehicles require significantly more active energy management than in previous seasons and accept that this can significantly contribute to exceeding the SC2-SC1 time, especially on a track like Silverstone.”

“The race stewards therefore acknowledge that the vehicle’s energy management requirements were a contributing factor in this case and consider this a mitigating circumstance.”
