How important is pole really?
Basically, no one would deny that Saturday in Monaco is the most important in a Formula 1 season. In fact, the numbers from previous years only partially support this.
Because of the last ten races in Monaco, only five were won from pole. That’s just a 50 percent rate. There are other tracks on the calendar where this value has recently been significantly higher.

Mercedes: Better than in previous years
George Russell and Kimi Antonelli only finished P4 and P5 yesterday. They couldn’t keep up with the Ferraris and Max Verstappen. Nevertheless, Mercedes is cautiously optimistic.

In fact, Mercedes hasn’t been on the podium in Monaco since 2019. “If we want to fight for the front row tomorrow, we definitely need to increase our pace,” Shovlin knows.
“Fortunately, however, we have a car we can work with, and above all, we see some opportunities to make it faster,” he also reveals.
It is therefore “encouraging that the W17 – at least at first glance – seems to be somewhat better suited for this track than its predecessors.”
