Wolff: Planning with Russell and Antonelli

The Mercedes team principal has just made it clear on Sky that he does not want to change the driver pairing for 2027. “We don’t want to change anything, and we told George that,” said Wolff.

“I think this pairing is good for us. I am very satisfied with both of them,” he emphasizes. Regarding Russell’s best time in FP3, he says: “It’s always nice to finish the session at the top of the time list.”

This applies especially because for Russell “the previous runs didn’t go quite smoothly,” Wolff recalls and explains that the changes to Russell’s car apparently worked.

Let’s see how qualifying looks later.

Lots of variety in Spielberg

I just checked our large database and found that there have been six different race winners in Spielberg since 2020. The only driver who won multiple times at the Red Bull Ring during this period is Max Verstappen (twice in 2021 and 2023).

Also Valtteri Bottas (2020), Lewis Hamilton (2020), Charles Leclerc (2022), George Russell (2024) and most recently Lando Norris (2025). In 2020 and 2021 there were two Grands Prix each in Spielberg – and thus six different winners in a total of eight Spielberg races since 2020.

Today 27 years ago …

… Heinz-Harald Frentzen won the 1999 French Grand Prix. The Jordan driver surprisingly beat the later world champion Mika Häkkinen in the McLaren at that time.

On social media, he has now revealed a secret about his first win for Jordan. He writes: “The secret I never revealed: On Saturday evening I ate Bourbon snails (Escargots à la Bourguignonne)!”

“Who dares wins,” Frentzen says with a wink. On the track, he was anything but a snail …

Curfew broken

Mercedes and Audi broke the curfew last night. However, there is no penalty for either team, as Audi used the second of four allowed jokers, Mercedes the first.

It would of course be interesting to know why the curfew was broken at all. This is not revealed in the official FIA document. We will of course investigate.

Audi: Do the upgrades work?

The Audi drivers finished yesterday in P10 and P14. Nico Hülkenberg explains: “Overall it was a solid day. […] Today I also tested the new update package for the first time.”

“It’s always difficult to make direct comparisons between different race tracks, but the first impression was positive. We collected some useful information,” said the German.

Teammate Gabriel Bortoleto adds: “We are bringing some upgrades this weekend, and it looks like they are fulfilling their purpose, but it’s still too early for a final judgment.”

You now have to look at the data to get a clearer picture.
