Advantage from rain test?
Speaking of which: Not only Alpine has already completed a rain test for Pirelli this year, the same applies to Ferrari and Red Bull. “I think that’s an advantage,” says McLaren team principal Andrea Stella.
It’s not just about the tires, but also about the behavior of the power unit, Stella reveals and explains: “On a wet track, the conditions deviate even more from what you expect and what you can simulate.”
“So the power unit undoubtedly remains an uncertainty factor that causes concern. And if you have tested with it, you might know a bit more,” says Stella.
Is it just about finishing today?
If it really rains later, according to Pierre Gasly, it might primarily be about just making it to the finish. “I think even on a dry track it is difficult to get the tires up to temperature,” explains the Alpine driver.
“Therefore, in my opinion, it will be extremely difficult in the rain,” says Gasly, who has already tried the rain tires at a Pirelli test in Magny-Cours – and apparently was not really convinced.
“In my experience, it will be quite an eventful race,” he predicts and explains that it will first be “important to see the checkered flag.” Because that would not be a given in the wet.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being a kind of elimination race,” says Gasly.
Direct comparison
Polesitter George Russell was only 0.068 seconds faster than teammate Kimi Antonelli in qualifying yesterday. Here you can watch the laps of the two Mercedes drivers again in a direct comparison:

What about the weather?
Perhaps the biggest question today is whether it will rain in Montreal. Because since precipitation is forecast, today could be the first rain race of the new Formula 1 era.
In fact, it already rained lightly early this morning. We will of course continue to keep an eye on the situation in the coming hours.
