Just like Schumacher in 1996? Hamilton’s win sparks comparisons

(Motorsport-Total.com) – Lewis Hamilton’s first Ferrari win at a Grand Prix has led to comparisons with Michael Schumacher in various places. After all, the Kerpener also managed to win his first race for the Scuderia in Barcelona.

“That is a lovely symmetry,” describes Tom Clarkson in the podcast “F1 Nation.” For years, the former journalist has been known as the voice of the sport at press conferences and talks about this symbolism in the official fan podcast of the racing series.

30 years ago, Schumacher achieved one of his masterpieces in pouring rain. The then inferior F310 was driven breathtakingly by the future record world champion over the track, while competitors like Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, or Jean Alesi were left behind.

Hamilton, on the other hand, was able to implement the new performance of his SF-26 in perfect conditions and, with the help of a VSC phase, secured the 106th Grand Prix win of his career.

The Dream of Ferrari

Comparisons of this kind are unlikely to go unnoticed by the most successful Formula 1 driver of all time. After all, the Ferrari driver proudly emphasized after his win: “I had this dream in front of me every single day,” he said.

“As a child, I saw Michael Schumacher win here for Ferrari in 1996. I still remember exactly how I watched the red car and wondered what it would be like to win in that car myself.”

“What it would be like to stand on this podium and give the team the moment when the national anthem plays,” is the question Hamilton was able to answer with his first Grand Prix success for the Maranello team.

Already after his signing for Ferrari, the seven-time world champion noted that he had also followed Schumacher’s Ferrari career as a child. “Back then, I played as Michael in Grand Prix 2,” Hamilton admitted at the time and described the dream of one day racing for the Scuderia.

Hamilton as Team Leader at Ferrari?

Claire Williams, formerly team principal at Williams Grand Prix, also mentions the parallels between the two champions. She especially focuses on the role of a team leader who fully understands himself as part of the racing team: “That was exactly Michael at Ferrari, and that is extraordinary,” Williams explains in the “High Performance” podcast.

“But a team has to be in a certain position for that. Also, the driver [for this role] needs a very special personality. And you rarely see that.”

“We have Max Verstappen at Red Bull, that happened there. We talked about Michael, and now it is probably Lewis at Ferrari. But, as I said, that requires enormous presence, a lot of communication and work.”

Furthermore, Williams explains that she finds the accent of the Ferrari driver quite charming when he speaks Italian. “How often is he down there? Is he starting to spend more time there? I don’t know.”

She emphasizes that many had already written off the 106-time Grand Prix winner after his unsuccessful 2025 season. “But anyone who has been active in this sport for a long time knows how long a driver [needs for adjustment],” says Williams.

“Especially someone who comes from a racing team where he was very successful for a long time. Lewis had that at Mercedes.”

“It won’t be easy to build a new team,” Williams explains. “That will take a damn lot of time. It takes time until everything really works well together. And you must not underestimate the cultural differences between Mercedes and Ferrari and pretty much every other team on the grid.”

Schumacher Also Needed Patience

The duo of Schumacher and Ferrari was not always a perfect combination either. Although Schumacher was able to win two more races in 1996, the first driver title for the Scuderia was only achieved in 2000.

In previous world championship duels against Jacques Villeneuve or Mika Häkkinen, the single-seater from Maranello was usually considered the inferior car, even though the team around Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne was able to improve year after year.

This work ultimately resulted in six constructors’ world championships and five drivers’ world championships. In contrast, the question arises whether Hamilton can still win his first title for Ferrari and his eighth title overall in 2026.
