Although it was only about a position in the back of the midfield, the two drivers didn’t give each other an inch. Lawson in particular was noticeably irritated by his opponent’s approach in the aftermath.

After the race, the New Zealander stated unmistakably: “He’s fighting me as if it were for the world championship, yet we’re racing for P16.” This statement illustrates the enormous tension that was released on the track and which seemed to go far beyond an ordinary battle for position.

Perez vs. Lawson: There was something there

The particular explosiveness of the duel stems from a complex, shared history. Both drivers experienced a career rollercoaster marked by twists and turns within the Red Bull cosmos. Perez lost his seat in the top team at the end of 2024 to the up-and-coming Lawson.

However, his meteoric rise was short-lived, as he himself was demoted back to the sister team Racing Bulls after just two races at Red Bull Racing. This sets the stage for a new, old constellation: two drivers whose paths cross at eye level in the midfield and who both have a score to settle with the past.

Even before Lawson’s brief stint in the main team, for example at the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix, they engaged in gripping duels that already hinted at today’s intensity. To be fair, Lawson added in the interview that he did not classify Perez’s action as against the rules: “No, it wasn’t anything illegal. He was just aggressive.”

Entertaining or unnecessary?

At the same time, he put the significance of the incident for his own race into perspective: “To be honest, I don’t care, it’s about 16th place. My race was already over at that point anyway.”

Sergio Perez himself gave a pointedly objective assessment of the events for the record. “For me, that was just racing, an entertaining duel. There’s nothing more to say about it.” The Mexican refrained from any emotional reply and instead focused on the sporting conditions.

His central argument for the tough approach was the inferior technology. “I was in a significantly slower car. Therefore, I think it’s absolutely fine to fight in this way.” For the experienced driver, it is a matter of sporting survival to compensate for the disadvantages of the equipment through driving skill and maximum determination.

The episode between Lawson and Perez exemplifies how the personal history of two drivers fuels the dynamics on the race track. Regardless of the championship position, their shared past ensures that every direct encounter promises a special intensity.
