(Motorsport-Total.com) – Mercedes has withdrawn its “Right of Review” application regarding George Russell’s time penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix. This was announced by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) on Thursday evening.

Russell was among several drivers who received a time penalty for speeding in the pit lane. It later emerged that there was a timing error at the entrance to the Monaco pit lane, which triggered incorrect signals.
Russell lost all chances of a podium finish in Monaco because he did not serve his penalty correctly there. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was also affected. Alpine driver Pierre Gasly, on the other hand, only served his two time penalties after the race, initially losing the podium place he had inherited.
However, after Alpine filed a request for review, the stewards overturned the Frenchman’s penalties last Friday and reinstated his podium finish.
Given Gasly’s reinstatement and the recognition that there had been a timing issue, Mercedes decided on Tuesday to also file a request for review to potentially have Russell’s result corrected.

However, the FIA confirmed on Thursday evening that Mercedes had withdrawn the application. Team principal Toto Wolff had previously admitted that the chances of success were slim.
“The stewards have been informed by the Mercedes Formula 1 Team that the request for review of the decisions of the stewards of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix regarding a breach of Article B1.6.3a of the FIA F1 Regulations concerning car 63 is withdrawn,” the FIA stewards announced.
Red Bull and McLaren, meanwhile, have appealed against Gasly’s reinstatement to P3, considering it unfair that the Frenchman was rewarded for not serving his penalties, while other wrongful penalties cannot be reversed.
This procedure will go before the FIA International Court of Appeal.
