(Motorsport-Total.com) – Lando Norris’ contract extension for four years is likely one of the least surprising announcements of the Formula 1 silly season. Nevertheless, it is a significant development – both for McLaren’s future prospects and for those of his teammate.

With a salary that is undoubtedly appropriate for a world champion, Norris has signed a contract that binds him to Woking until 2030. In addition, there are options for several more years, which could keep Norris at McLaren well into his 30s.
Imagining Norris ever in a racing suit with other colors always felt like a hard-to-imagine thought experiment. Now, the lucrative new McLaren contract of the 26-year-old has definitively taken one of Formula 1’s biggest stars off the driver market for many years and made Norris the central figure of identification for the team from Woking.
How Norris came to McLaren
Norris’ career at McLaren began a decade ago when Zak Brown signed him and supported him together with Carlin on his way through the junior series. In 2019, Norris replaced Stoffel Vandoorne as a Grand Prix driver and thus belonged to a new generation of British talents, which also included George Russell and Alex Albon.
From a fast but still unfinished and uncertain talent, he became a superstar and world champion. Last season was undoubtedly Norris’ coming-of-age year: he overcame problems with his driving style, technical defects, and an enormously strong teammate in Oscar Piastri and won his first world championship.
This triumph seems to have changed something in Norris. From the hope of one day realizing his dreams, it finally became the certainty that he actually can. Seeing is believing.
“Lando drives and works at the level of a world champion,” said team principal Andrea Stella after Norris’ victory in Zandvoort. “What I like best about his journey in Formula 1 is that he keeps improving. And I think especially after the start of the 2025 season, something clicked, and it’s not just a single click but a way of working with Lando that we now also apply especially on Oscar’s side. And I think this approach has led to continuous improvements in Lando.”
It is precisely this kind of consistency that McLaren wanted to secure in the long term and is willing to put an undisclosed but undoubtedly considerable sum on the table for it.
Search for stability shapes quiet driver market for 2027
At 26, Norris is just entering his prime years. Binding their most successful driver since Lewis Hamilton in the long term therefore gives McLaren additional stability while the team tries to leave behind a somewhat sluggish start to the 2026 season. Norris’ two wins immediately before and after the summer break are a sign that the team is slowly getting back there.
A look at the strikingly quiet driver market further underscores how valuable stability currently is. The teams were pushed to their limits by the complex power unit regulations for 2026 and are therefore trying to remove as many unknowns as possible from the equation elsewhere – as long as their drivers deliver the corresponding performances.
The Formula 1 Drivers 2027
When Max Verstappen, as so often the decisive domino of the silly season, decided to stay at Red Bull, it was practically preprogrammed that the 2027 starting grid would be very similar to this year’s. Besides Verstappen’s now ten-year affiliation with the team from Milton Keynes, Charles Leclerc has also reaffirmed his commitment to Ferrari. And Mercedes will undoubtedly try to achieve a similar long-term commitment with its drivers – especially with Kimi Antonelli.

In an interview with Motorsport.com, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur explains the value of Leclerc’s long-term connection with Maranello: “Having this kind of continuity is always positive. For me, it is also much easier to work with drivers I have known forever. Sometimes you don’t have to discuss something if you have known someone for ten, 15, or 20 years, if the first feeling is right and you know what he thinks.”
That such mutual trust and understanding also exists between Norris and McLaren is obvious. And both sides benefit from it.
And what about Oscar Piastri?
It will be exciting to see how Piastri and his management evaluate this prominent deal of his teammate. The Australian extended his contract at the beginning of the 2025 season until 2028. The world championship then seemed one he could only lose, before a combination of declining performance, mistakes by the driver and the team, and bad luck ultimately left him behind both Norris and Verstappen.
For Piastri, that was a heavy blow. And the discomfort about team orders and internal rules during various phases of the 2025 season – such as the controversial position swap at the Italian Grand Prix or after the contacts between the two teammates in Singapore and Austin – could well come back to Piastri or his management when they assess the impact of Norris’ long-term and highly paid contract. Anyone who already believes McLaren is Norris’ team and will always remain so is likely to see his contract extension merely as confirmation of this thesis.
At the moment, however, Piastri has more urgent concerns. Compared to his almost unassailable first half of the 2025 season, the 25-year-old has been in a performance slump for some time with the new 2026 car generation. Apparently, he struggles with similar problems adapting his driving style as last year on low-grip tracks, such as Austin and Mexico.

Team principal Stella explained that Piastri’s problems are “purely technical” and have nothing to do with his mental state – regardless of whether it concerns the end of the 2025 season or the beginning of 2026. On Monday, it will be a full calendar year since Piastri last won a Grand Prix.
McLaren’s approach to solving this does not differ significantly from the one with which the team helped Norris last year. Behind the scenes, McLaren is working with Piastri on adjustments both to the car and to his driving style. If successful, the team would have its two aces back in top form – in time for a second half of the 2026 season that is shaping up to be a close fight and a possible title challenge next year.
McLaren’s goal remains that both drivers fight each other for wins and world championships. That would also mean that Piastri takes a similar path and extends his contract long term. It is up to the Australian’s camp to decide whether that is in his interest – or whether the time has possibly come to explore new horizons. Either way, time plays into both Piastri’s and McLaren’s hands, as his current contract runs until the end of 2028.
In the meantime, McLaren has tied its reigning world champion to the entire period of the current regulations. That leaves one less puzzle piece for the team from Woking to worry about as it tries to keep its world champion team together and even strengthen it further.
