One-time statistic: Kimi Antonelli surpasses Schumacher and Häkkinen

(Motorsport-Total.com) – Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli is the man of the hour in Formula 1 – and he is rewriting the record books of the racing series. Although drivers before him had already achieved their first three pole positions or their first three Grand Prix wins consecutively, no one had managed to combine both series until now. Antonelli has now accomplished this (more in the Formula 1 database!).

“That’s a cool statistic,” said Antonelli when asked about his special achievement after the Miami Grand Prix. “I didn’t even know that. But honestly, I don’t want to think about it too much. I’m just trying to enjoy the moment. But yes, cool thing!”

Antonelli achieved his first pole position one and a half months ago at the Chinese Grand Prix. The next day, he won his first race. At the following Grands Prix, Antonelli continued this streak: pole position and victory in Japan, pole position and victory in Miami. After four race weekends in 2026, he is the clear championship leader – and a serious title contender.

What the statistics say about Antonelli’s performance

Statistically, Antonelli’s performance is a good omen in two ways: the first three consecutive pole positions were previously achieved by Ayrton Senna in 1985 with Lotus and Michael Schumacher in 1994 with Benetton. Both later became multiple Formula 1 World Champions, “Schumi” even for the first time in the same year.

What neither Senna nor Schumacher managed: to achieve their first three Grand Prix wins consecutively. This, however, was achieved by Damon Hill in 1993 with Williams and Mika Häkkinen in 1997/98 with McLaren. Hill and Häkkinen also became World Champions: Hill in 1996, Häkkinen in 1998 and 1999.

Toto Wolff expects “much success in the future”

That only two drivers before Antonelli have achieved a similar feat and that these drivers went on to achieve great success is likely to encourage Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff: He pushed early to bring Antonelli into the Formula 1 factory team as a teenager. This risk is already paying off in Antonelli’s second season.

But Wolff applied the brakes on euphoria after the Miami Grand Prix. He said on Sky England: “Hopefully Kimi can continue the upward trend. But the most important thing is that we don’t get carried away now.”

However, the results so far give Wolff reason to look forward to what might still come: “Kimi has the speed. Now the experience is also coming. I think we are talking about much success in the future.”
