(Motorsport-Total.com) – Kimi Antonelli is contesting his first home race this weekend with a car that is potentially capable of winning. However, a grid penalty immediately takes the pressure off him in front of his home crowd. It could even prevent the 2024 scenario from repeating itself.

It is a story that Mercedes press officers can still laugh about: Two years ago, Toto Wolff announced Antonelli’s promotion to Formula 1 more or less prematurely – during Wolff’s now famous media round with the Dutch press in Zandvoort.
The atmosphere in these small group discussions is always relaxed. The Dutch word “gezellig” might even be fitting. But Wolff was not supposed to spill the news a week before the planned announcement in Antonelli’s home country.
The big fuss about Antonelli in 2024 in Monza
Understandably, everyone present immediately pounced on the Antonelli headline. For the Mercedes press officers, this meant several phone calls – including with the author of this text, who had already missed three calls while recording the daily paddock video. By that time, the story had already appeared in Autosport, a sister platform of Motorsport-Total.com and Formel1.de at Motorsport Network.
Because actually, the big moment was supposed to be reserved for the Italian Grand Prix. And so it happened a week later in Monza: The Mercedes hospitality was packed during the media round with Antonelli. Fittingly, Antonelli was also allowed to take the wheel of the Mercedes W15 for his first Formula 1 practice session the next day.
How that ended is well known. Driven by a mix of youthful enthusiasm and the desire to prove himself immediately on home soil, Antonelli crashed in the “Parabolica” corner after just ten minutes. A load of no less than 52 g was measured during his accident. Wolff later admitted it was a mistake to let Antonelli make his practice debut precisely in Monza.
How Toto Wolff commented on the accident back then
The Austrian joked that the car looked like a Lego box that had fallen to the ground. More seriously, he added that such incidents are to be expected with a rookie and that the team must also question its own decision.
“Such moments happen, and they will continue to happen next year as well. But there will also be many highlights,” Wolff said at the time.
“I think today we saw that our problem might rather be to slow him down than to make him faster. Because what we saw in one and a half laps was amazing.”
Why Wolff is surprised by Antonelli today
Two years later, the situation looks very different, and Antonelli has already made enormous progress. Yes, 2025 went exactly as Wolff predicted in his quote back then: moments of brilliance alternated with rookie mistakes and weekends where Antonelli struggled a lot.
However, in 2026 Antonelli has taken a step forward that even surprised Wolff. The 54-year-old team boss described Antonelli’s development as one of the biggest surprises of his Formula 1 career. Considering all that Wolff has already experienced in the paddock, that is a remarkable statement.
In retrospect, he can explain this enormous step of development: “When I analyze it and ask myself why he had such a good reputation in junior series and karting, I think it is because of his processing speed,” Wolff explained.

“I think he just needed the winter [from 2025 to 2026] to process everything. What was good? What was bad? What do I have to do? And that means now it’s simply about driving and preparation, instead of standing there like a deer in the headlights in 2025 and wondering: ‘What is happening here right now?’ But yes, it is still one of the really nice surprises.”
Because Antonelli has now experienced everything before, he is no longer “like a deer in the headlights,” according to Wolff. The Antonelli who now leads the championship by 59 points is significantly more experienced as a driver and as a person than the youngster who crashed so heavily in the “Parabolica” two years ago.
What pressure Antonelli is really under
The enormous pressure in Italy still exists. Admittedly, this pressure is even greater at Ferrari. But Wolff has repeatedly spoken about it in connection with Antonelli since the beginning of the year.
It was no coincidence that Wolff told the Italian press right after Antonelli’s first Formula 1 win in China how the headlines should read the next day: “piedi per terra” – both feet on the ground.

According to the Mercedes team boss, no one would benefit from all the hype. But exactly this hype now threatens to arise, as Antonelli is competing for the first time with a potentially winning car in front of his home crowd.
How different the starting position is in 2026
Although Antonelli is now significantly more mature, the additional pressure of a home race still carries the risk of a repeat of the 2024 scenario. However, the grid penalty takes much of the sting out of this danger.
How much the penalty reduced the pressure was also clearly evident during Antonelli’s media round with the Italian press before the Monza weekend. Without the grid penalty, the questions from the home press would understandably have focused mainly on a possible win in front of the home crowd.
This time, the first two questions were instead:
“Do you now have a clearer idea of what result you can aim for this weekend when starting from the back of the grid?”
“Qualifying will not be particularly important for you. Because the slipstream is so important on this track: Could you be asked to help George?”
Why Mercedes accepts the penalty in Monza
This changed the entire conversation dynamic and took pressure off Antonelli. The penalty could thus prove to be a blessing in disguise. However, it must be emphasized that the decision to accept the penalty precisely in Monza is primarily for strategic reasons.
Overtaking is comparatively easy here – probably unnaturally easy with the 2026 cars. The upcoming races are less suitable for starting from the back of the field: Madrid is a big unknown, Baku is chaotic, Malaysia is also a question mark on its return to the Formula 1 calendar, and overtaking is practically impossible during the sprint weekend in Singapore.
In addition, Mercedes is already considering the ADUO upgrade, which is to be introduced in October. Because all components will now be changed in Monza, Antonelli only has to accept a five-place grid penalty later to be able to use the ADUO upgrade, according to his own statement.
These are, of course, the main reasons for accepting the grid penalty for Antonelli precisely in the “Temple of Speed” – although given the 2026 cars, perhaps “Temple of Losing Speed” would be a more fitting name.
That the young Italian has already been relieved before he has even driven a single meter this weekend can at least be described as a welcome side effect.
How Antonelli perceives the special situation
Antonelli sees it very similarly – but with one laughing and one crying eye, as he explained on media day before the Italian Grand Prix: “It obviously helps to reduce the pressure. It relaxes me. I go into the weekend a bit more relaxed, but of course I would much rather fight for pole position and start from the front.”
Nevertheless, he appreciates the special starting position: “This time we can try something different and especially pursue a different approach in free practice – because we have the opportunity [due to the penalty]. I think that will also allow me to enjoy driving more this weekend,” Antonelli said.
The current championship leader is still focused on success. He wants to “maximize” the result, Antonelli announced. “If it goes well,” a top-5 result could still be possible for him on Sunday. “That depends on our pace and the gaps between the cars. We will see.”
Theoretically, he is even at an advantage in Monza due to the fresh power unit components and the special energy management: “The available energy is particularly limited. There are many places where energy can be used differently. That is why Monza offers us the best chances to work our way through the field. We considered it the best solution. Hopefully, this calculation will pay off.”
