(Motorsport-Total.com) – Williams team principal James Vowles has admitted that the current development speed of the team is not sufficient to achieve the desired progress in Formula 1. After a difficult British Grand Prix, the Grove-based team has therefore initiated a comprehensive analysis of its upgrade program so far.

In the current video of “The Vowles Verdict”, Vowles draws a first conclusion about the innovations introduced in Silverstone. Although Williams brought new components to the FW48 at the home race, the performance gain achieved fell short of expectations according to the team principal.
“I would say that it is currently clear that our speed at which we bring performance to the car, and I mean that in a somewhat nuanced way, is not at the level required to move us forward,” Vowles explains calmly.
Analysis to uncover weaknesses
To identify the causes, Williams wants to analyze all updates introduced this season. The evaluation is to take place between the British Grand Prix and the race weekend in Spa-Francorchamps.
“The first step is to take the time not only to fully understand what we did in Silverstone but really to analyze what we have done throughout the season,” says Vowles.
“All developments provide clues and evidence of what worked well and what didn’t. How quickly we evaluate this, and I usually expect this to be completed within the next two weeks, will then determine what we do in Spa, in Budapest, later in the season, and at the same time with regard to next year,” the Williams team principal continues.

Vowles: “Learning is part of everyday Formula 1”
The Brit emphasizes that such an analysis process is part of the normal daily work of a Formula 1 team: “From my point of view, this is the normal business of a Formula 1 team. You constantly experience highs and lows, continuously gain insights, make mistakes, and find that results deviate from expectations. That changes from week to week.”
At the same time, Vowles points to the special challenges in developing new car parts. “It is simply the nature of a business where you develop new performance and new components that did not exist before. No one provides data for that, and ultimately no one has developed them before. That’s why we have to keep learning throughout the process.”
Positive signals despite lack of progress
Despite the current difficulties, the team principal also sees positive aspects. “I am pleased that we have a very good culture of openness, learning, and quick response. That is exactly what makes a team for me.”
After nine Grand Prix of the 2026 Formula 1 season, Williams is in eighth place in the constructors’ championship with eleven points. The insights from the ongoing analysis are now to form the basis for further development of the car in the second half of the season as well as for planning for 2027.
