Formula 1 drivers always dissatisfied? Liam Lawson on the 2026 regulations

(Motorsport-Total.com) – According to Liam Lawson, Formula 1 drivers complain “about virtually everything.” With these words, the Racing Bulls driver commented on the criticism of many colleagues about the current Formula 1 regulations in an interview with Motorsport.com, a sister platform of Motorsport-Total.com in the Motorsport Network.

Lawson emphasizes that many points of criticism are indeed justified. “At the end of the day, there are always things we expect from a car,” says the New Zealander. “And probably as drivers, we will literally complain about virtually everything, that will never change.”

“But regarding the rules, I think the biggest point right now is safety, as we saw in Japan,” Lawson continues. The 24-year-old is referring to the spectacular accident of Oliver Bearman.

Due to a misunderstanding between the Haas driver and Franco Colapinto, the Briton ended up with a 50 g impact in the barrier. Since then, the safety risks of Formula 1 in 2026 have been widely discussed.

“I think we want to avoid something like that in the future. And in terms of performance, that is something that will obviously continue to evolve.”

On average, the current generation cars are about two seconds slower in qualifying than their bulky predecessors. This gap could, depending on changes to the engine regulations, increase significantly over the course of the year and from track to track. Lawson, however, focuses in his statement on the development possibilities.

“If you look at any other rules at the beginning, there was huge development over the five-year period during which the rules were active,” notes the former Red Bull driver.

“So I am sure that these will obviously continue to develop and become faster, and I am sure we will find ways to make the cars more pleasant to drive.”

“I hope we can achieve that, because I think currently, especially in qualifying, we try to get the car to the limit and squeeze everything out in a way that currently feels like we can’t.”

Currently, discussions about the regulations are taking place behind the scenes. FIA and Formula 1 are in dialogue with the teams these days and are expected to present news about the future of the premier class in the coming weeks.
