Hamilton on Verstappen duel
Earlier we watched the duel of the two world champions again in the video. Verstappen called for a penalty for Hamilton over the radio because he felt pushed off once by his old rival.
Hamilton himself says about the situation: “You don’t expect to be able to overtake a champion on the outside. I didn’t expect to overtake him there on the outside and hold the line.”
“He was behind at the apex and therefore should have backed off. I left him just enough space,” Hamilton emphasizes. The race stewards saw it the same way, so there was no penalty.

Wolff: Never write off Verstappen
Toto Wolff also commented on Max Verstappen’s possible championship chances this year. “Max is always good for playing a role in the championship,” warns the Mercedes team boss.
The Dutchman always gets the maximum out of the car. “That’s why you should never ignore or underestimate the ‘Verstappen factor’ in the fight for the championship,” says Wolff.
He expressed similar views after Barcelona about Lewis Hamilton. But the Brit slipped back to third in the championship yesterday and Verstappen is currently only seventh.
Fastest lap
He didn’t win the race yesterday, but the fastest man was once again championship leader Kimi Antonelli – at least over one lap.
The Italian drove the fastest lap in Austria for the fifth time this year. Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, and Max Verstappen each have one.
His fastest race lap in Spielberg can be seen here again in the video:
“Headache” for Leclerc?
The Monegasque finished behind Lewis Hamilton for the fifth race in a row yesterday. The last time Leclerc saw the checkered flag ahead of his teammate was in Suzuka. That was three months ago now.
“That is working on him,” believes expert Timo Glock, who explains on Sky: “He is trying to understand why it is like this. He said he lacks the last bit of confidence in the car and that the aggression he usually manages in Q3 no longer works.”
“When a race like that comes along and the teammate takes points from you again, it gives you a headache,” he suspects. And next up is Silverstone, of all places a strong track for Hamilton …
Stella: Mercedes is not done yet
Mercedes won seven of the first eight races of the season. Still, Andrea Stella does not believe the championship is already decided. The McLaren team boss explains: “Mercedes started the season with a decent lead from a chassis perspective.”
But since then, the Silver Arrows have also brought a bigger upgrade. He therefore suspects: “If Mercedes had come here [to Austria] with the Melbourne car, they probably would have lost the race today, and we would have had a new winner.”
“Even for Mercedes, it is a development race,” he emphasizes and explains: “If they don’t further develop their car with another extensive upgrade, I wouldn’t be surprised if another team has the fastest car in the second half of the season.”
That means: Mercedes must not slack off, otherwise the lead will quickly be used up. The close race against Verstappen yesterday already showed that.

Poor sleep?
Although Red Bull is still not in championship form, Max Verstappen is likely among the drivers who had a better night. In this context, as every Monday, I like to refer to our two popular columns and our video analysis of the Austria race:
